The Touchdown Club of Houston hosted their annual pre-season All-Greater Houston teams at the JW Marriott Hotel on Wednesday, August 16. Five area standouts were named among the 30 players that were honored at this year's dinner featuring the top offensive and defensive stars in the Houston area.
Friendswood linebacker Bo Mosley (6-2, 230) was named to the defensive unit. Mosley was the District 23-4A "Newcomer of the Year" his sophomore year, but was sidelined prior to last season with a knee injury. The hard-hitting senior is excited about the upcoming season and his knee has been fully rehabilitated. Mosley has made a non-binding verbal commitment to continue his education and playing career at the next level for the University of Houston Cougars.
Clear Brook linebacker Anthony Smith joins Mosley as a member of the pre-season All-Greater Houston linebacking corps. Smith (6-1, 220) was one of the leading defensive players in District 24-5A last season and returns to lead the Wolverines on the defensive side of the ball in 2006.
Pearland running back Fozzy Whittaker (5-10, 180) was selected as one of the top four running backs in the Houston area. Joining Whittaker is Jai Caveness (FB Marshall), Josh Lewis (Cy-Springs), and Marcus Mendoza (Spring Woods). Whittaker and Lewis are the marquee ball carriers returning for their senior campaign.
Lewis finished as the top rusher in the Houston area last season with 330 carries for 1,883 yards and 15 touchdowns while Whittaker was the top ball carrier for District 24-5A and the second leading rusher in the Houston area. The speedster had 210 carries for 1,705 yards and 18 touchdowns. Whittaker, who has made a non-binding verbal commitment to play at the University of Texas, has a two-year total of 2,943 yards and 27 touchdowns. He had 1,238 yards and nine TDs his sophomore year.
While Lewis finished with the most yards in the Houston area last year -- Whittaker had 120 fewer carries than Lewis and only finished 178 yards behind in the second spot. Pearland had five games that Whittaker saw little action in the second half because of a lopsided win.
Also - Lewis played for a Cy-Springs team that finished with a 1-9 season record while Whittaker was part of a team that finished 10-0 during the regular season while winning sole possession of the District 24-5A championship.
Caveness returns for Fort Bend Marshall after gaining 636 yards on 101 carries and five touchdowns for a team that finished at 9-1 in 2005. Marcus Mendoza of Spring Woods had 78 carries for 657 yards and 10 TDs and seven catches for 272 yards and three scores on a team that finished with a 2-8 mark.
The La Marque Cougars had two outstanding players named to the pretigious pre-season squad.
University of Texas pledge offensive tackle Aundre McGaskey will anchor the offensive line for the Cougars this season in their quest to win the District 23-4A crown again and make another deep run in the playoffs.
Also on the pre-season team from La Marque is All-State defensive back James Thomas who had 11 interceptions last season. La Marque head coach Bryan Erwin is expecting Thomas to be the defensive leader this year..
